Abstract
Music is a medium of communication used to convey various forms of expression, including expressions of the heart and life experiences. Semiotic analysis is an important approach to understanding the meaning contained in song lyrics, such as those in the song “Backburner” by NIKI Zefanya. This approach allows the identification of two layers of meaning in the lyrics: denotation, which refers to the literal meaning, and connotation, which includes additional meanings based on cultural context and personal experience. Through Roland Barthes' semiotic theory, it is revealed that song lyrics function not only as artistic expression, but also as a medium of emotional communication. The song “Backburner” addresses the themes of love, loss, and hope, and depicts the pain of being ignored in relationships. Denotatively, the term “backburner” means something that is postponed or prioritized lower. Connotatively, the song reflects sadness, helplessness, and the hope of being appreciated. The use of melancholic chord progressions that alternate between minor and major reinforces the emotional nuances and uncertainty conveyed in the song, showing the depth of pent-up feelings.
