Abstract

This study examines the role and influence of ulama (Islamic scholars) in the 2020 Pandeglang Regional Head Election by integrating Max Weber’s theory of charismatic authority and James C. Scott’s patron-client theory, along with the concept of ulama as vote getters. The qualitative research methods used include document analysis, interviews, and observations. The findings reveal that the charisma of ulama, derived from their leadership, religious knowledge, and societal respect as heirs of the Prophet, makes them highly influential in politics. Within the framework of patron-client theory, ulama act as patrons who provide moral and political support to candidates, while candidates offer various material benefits in return, such as financial aid for students, facilities for religious schools, and grant funds. This relationship illustrates how ulama’s charisma enhances their effectiveness as vote getters and how the patron-client system creates a mutually beneficial exchange. Ulama’s support contributes to the candidates’ success in obtaining votes, while ulama receive benefits that reinforce their societal position. This dynamic reflects the interplay of power and dependence in local politics, which affects electoral outcomes..
