Abstract

The amount of plastic waste from food packaging was increasing and causing the disturbances in environmental and human health. The renewable food packaging innovations needed that can decompose quickly but still maintain the shelf life of food products, such as biogeradable film. This research used the basic ingredients of beneng taro starch, glycerol, and cellulose extracted from red seaweed Gracilaria sp. which is treated with different bleaching conditions during extraction. The purpose of this research was to determine the best cellulose bleaching conditions and the effect of different cellulose concentrations on the characteristics of biodegradable films. The method was used experimental with a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) which is divided into two stages of research, namely cellulose extraction with different bleaching conditions and making biogeradable films with different cellulose concentrations. The results of this research indicate that there is an effect of treatment on the research response. The best cellulose was obtained from the treatment using 4% NaOCl at room temperature for 6 hours during the bleaching process. The use of cellulose can increase the thickness, tensile strength, reduce the percentage of elongation and brightness of the film, increase the density value and water vapor transmission rate, and accelerate the degradation of the film.
