Abstract

Water Hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) is a weed that thrives in tropical and sub-tropical waters, such as swamps and reservoirs in Indonesia. These plants can cover the entire surface of the water quickly and without proper management, can cause environmental problems. However, hyacinth has potential as a cosmetic raw material due to its nutritional content which includes vitamins A, B1, and C, which are beneficial in skin care. This study aims to develop a body lotion using extracts of leaves and stems of water hyacinth and evaluate the best formulation. The study was conducted in April 2024 in a laboratory at Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University, with test parameters including emulsion type, pH, homogeneity, centrifugal, moisture, organoleptic (aroma, texture, color, absorption), dispersibility, irritation, and antioxidant activity. The results showed that the best formulation of body lotion is F1 (hyacinth leaf extract 10%) with antioxidant value of 24,75±0,26, the physical characteristics of the preparation are stable, homogeneous, non-irritating, emulsion type produced by oil in water, with pH and humidity values that match the standard. While organoleptic test indicated that the body lotion in formulation F3 (10% extract concentration of hyacinth stem) has the aroma, texture, and absorption of the most preferred panelists. This study shows the potential use of water hyacinth as a raw material for body lotion that is beneficial for skin health.

Additional Information: Eceng Gondok (Eichhornia crassipes) merupakan gulma yang tumbuh subur di perairan tropis dan sub tropis, seperti rawa dan waduk di Indonesia. Tumbuhan ini dapat menutupi seluruh permukaan air dengan cepat dan tanpa pengelolaan yang tepat, dapat menimbulkan masalah lingkungan. Namun eceng gondok berpotensi sebagai bahan baku kosmetik karena kandungan nutrisinya yang meliputi vitamin A, B1, dan C yang bermanfaat untuk perawatan kulit. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan body lotion dengan menggunakan ekstrak daun dan batang eceng gondok dan mengevaluasi formulasi yang terbaik. Penelitian dilakukan pada bulan April 2024 di laboratorium Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa, dengan parameter uji antara lain jenis emulsi, pH, homogenitas, sentrifugal, kelembapan, organoleptik (aroma, tekstur, warna, serapan), dispersibilitas, iritasi, dan aktivitas antioksidan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa formulasi body lotion terbaik adalah F1 (hyacinth leaf extract 10%) dengan nilai antioksidan 24,75±0,26, karakteristik fisik sediaan stabil, homogen, tidak menyebabkan iritasi, jenis emulsi yang dihasilkan oleh minyak dalam air, dengan nilai pH dan kelembaban yang sesuai dengan standar. Sedangkan uji organoleptik menunjukkan bahwa body lotion dalam formulasi F3 (konsentrasi ekstrak batang eceng gondok 10%) memiliki aroma, tekstur, dan daya serap yang paling disukai panelis. Penelitian ini menunjukkan potensi penggunaan eceng gondok sebagai bahan baku body lotion yang bermanfaat bagi kesehatan kulit.
