Abstract

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), it is stated that world nickel reserves until 2020 are estimated to reach 94 million tons of nickel metal (60% nickel laterite and 40% sulfide deposits). Indonesia has the largest potential nickel reserves, reaching 21 million tons of the world's nickel reserves. Nickel reserves in Indonesia are mostly available in the form of nickel laterite which is classified into two types, namely saprolite (Ni > 1.5%) and limonite (Ni < 1.5%). The processing of limonite nickel ore by the hydrometallurgical route is currently done through the acid leaching - solvent extraction process, but it is still very rare for the recovery stage to use the precipitation method (iron removal) so it is necessary to experiment using the acid leaching-precipitation method (iron removal) followed by the purification stage by electrowinning. Before electrowinning using limonite ore filtrate, simulations were carried out using artificial solutions to obtain the best conditions that can be applied to limonite nickel raw materials. The leaching process carried out is acid leaching using 1M sulfuric acid, temperature 90℃, S/L 2.5% for 8 hours and stirring speed 400 rpm. Then continued with two-stage iron removal with the addition of 2.5 M NaOH reagent to reach pH 3 at stage one and pH 3.5 at stage two. The two-stage iron removal process was carried out at a temperature of 80℃ for 1 hour with a stirring speed of 450 rpm. After the iron removal process was carried out by comparing artificial raw materials and limonite filtrate, the resulting Fe removal percent for artificial solution and limonite filtrate was 100% and 99.81%, respectively. The final stage of the electrowinning process was carried out by varying the current density (10, 15, 20 A/dm2) and time (2, 4, 6 hours). The results of the study on the artificial solution obtained the most deposits of 0.0203 grams with the condition of the current meeting 20A / dm2 for 6 hours, while the limonite filtrate produced the most deposits of 0.0259 grams with the condition of the current meeting 15A / dm2 for 4 hours. In addition, the results of the percent current efficiency of each raw material are in the artificial solution of 80% in the condition of 2 hours with a current meeting of 10A/dm2, while in the limonite filtrate of 80% in the condition of 4 hours with a current meeting of 10 A/dm2.

Indonesia memiliki potensi cadangan nikel terbesar, yaitu mencapai 21 juta ton dari cadangan nikel dunia. Cadangan nikel di Indonesia sebagian besar tersedia dalam bentuk nikel laterit yang digolongkan menjadi dua jenis, yaitu saprolit (Ni > 1,5%) dan limonit (Ni< 1,5%). Pengolahan bijih nikel limonit dengan jalur hidrometalurgi saat ini banyak dilakukan melalui proses acid leaching - solvent extraction, namun masih sangat jarang tahap recovery yang menggunakan metode presipitasi (iron removal) sehingga perlu dilakukan percobaan dengan menggunakan metode acid leaching-prsipitasi (iron removal) yang dilanjutkan tahap pemurnian dengan electrowinning. Sebelum dilakukan electrowinning menggunakan filtrat bijih limonit dilakukan simulasi menggunakan larutan artificial untuk memperoleh kondisi terbaik yang dapat diterapkan pada bahan baku nikel limonit. Proses leaching yang dilakukan yaitu acid leaching menggunakan asam sulfat 1M, temperatur 90"℃" , S/L 2,5% selama 8 jam dan kecepatan pengadukan 400 rpm. Kemudian dilanjutkan iron removal dua stage dengan penambahan reagen NaOH 2,5 M hingga mencapai pH 3 pada stage satu dan pH 3,5 pada stage dua. Proses iron removal dua stage dilakukan pada temperatur 80"℃" selama 1 jam dengan kecepatan pengadukan 450 rpm. Setelah dilakukan proses iron removal dengan membandingkan bahan baku artificial dan filtrat limonit, dihasilkan persen removal Fe untuk larutan artificial dan filtrat limonit masing-masing sebesar 100% dan 99,81%. Tahap akhir dilakukan proses electrowinning dengan memvariasikan rapat arus (10,15,20 A/dm2) dan waktu (2,4,6 jam). Hasil penelitian pada larutan artificial memperoleh endapan terbanyak yaitu 0,0203 gram dengan kondisi rapat arus 20A/dm2 selama 6 jam, sedangkan pada filtrat limonit menghasilkan endapan terbanyak yaitu 0,0259 gram dengan kondisi rapat arus 15A/dm2 selama 4 jam. Selain itu perolehan hasil persen efisiensi arus dari masing masing bahan baku yaitu pada larutan artificial sebesar 80% pada kondisi 2 jam dengan rapat arus 10A/dm2, sedangkan pada filtrat limonit sebesar 80% pada kondisi 4 jam dengan rapat arus 10 A/dm2.
