Abstract
The ability to understand the concept of students is still low in the subjects of social studies, students are still difficult in relating an information to a problem and still difficult to choose a strategy in solving the problem. this study aims to find out how the results of the improvement of learning models start with a question of the ability to understand the concept of students and to determine whether learning learning model start with a question higher than using direct instruction model or direct instruction. The research method used is quasi experimental method nonequivalent type control group design with purposive sampling technique. Population in this research is all class IV SDN Umbul Tengah 1 Serang City with sample that is class IV A as experiment class using learning model start with a question and class IV B as control class using direct instruction model year 2016/2017 on science subject social on the concept of natural appearance. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that there is a difference in the ability to understand the concept between students using learning model start with a question and using direct learning model. this can be proved from the results of calculations using normal and homogeneous Test data: the value of ℎ = 3.49 with dk = n1 + n2 - 2. = 23 + 23 - 2 = 44, α = 0.05 got the value = 2 , 01. So for the Two-Party Test ℎ > ' 3.49> 2.01, then 0 is rejected and accepted. Increased understanding of student concepts in the experimental class is higher than the students' understanding of the control class.

| Additional Information: | Kemampuan pemahaman konsep siswa masih rendah dalam mata pelajaran IPS, siswa masih kesulitan dalam mengkaitkan suatu informasi terhadap suatu masalah serta masih kesulitan memilih strategi dalam menyelesaikan masalah. penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bagaimana hasil dari peningkatan model pembelajaran learning start with a question terhadap kemampuan pemahaman konsep siswa dan untuk mengetahui apakah model pembelajaran learning start with a question lebih tinggi daripada menggunakan model pembelajaran langsung atau direct instruction. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode kuasi eksperimen tipe nonequivalent control group design dengan teknik purposive sampling. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah seluruh kelas IV SDN Umbul tengah 1 Kota Serang dengan sampel yaitu kelas IV A sebagai kelas eksperimen menggunakan model learning start with a question dan kelas IV B sebagai kelas kontrol menggunakan model direct instruction tahun 2016/2017 pada mata pelajaran ilmu pengetahuan sosial pada konsep kenampakan alam. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat perbedaan peningkatan kemampuan pemahaman konsep antara siswa yang menggunakan model learning start with a question dan yang menggunakan model pembelajaran langsung. hal ini dapat dibuktikan dari hasil perhitungan dengan menggunakan Uji– t data normal dan homogen yaitu : nilai ℎ = 3,49 dengan dk = n1 + n2 – 2.= 23 + 23 – 2 = 44, = 0.05 didapatkan nilai = 2,01. Sehinggauntuk Uji Dua Pihak ′ℎ > ′ 3,49 > 2,01, maka 0 ditolak dan diterima. Peningkatan pemahaman konsep siswa pada kelas eksperimen lebih tinggi daripada pemahaman konsep siswa pada kelas kontrol. | |||||||||
