Abstract

Rare earth elements (REEs) are part of the critical minerals that comprise the lanthanide group, Sc, and Y. The world demand for REEs from 2021 to 2023 has increased from 78 kt to 93 kt. The estimated increase in total demand of REEs until 2026 increased by 4.4%. One of the distributions of REEs in Indonesia is found in granite rocks spread across the islands of Sumatera, Sulawesi, Kalimantan, and Papua. The elemental content of granite is dominated by impurities such as Si, Al, and Fe rather than REEs, therefore a proper method is required to selectively extract REEs from granite. The sulfation roasting method is carried out at the temperature of impurities decomposition in the form of sulfate compounds. The variable of this process is the roasting temperature, which is 500, 600, 700, and 800oC. The resulting filtrate still contains impurities such as Al and Fe, therefore a two-stage precipitation process is required. Stage one precipitation uses CaCO3 with variable pH, namely 2.5; 3; 3.5; and 4. Stage two precipitation uses Ca(OH)2 with variable pH, namely 4.5; 5; 5.5; and 6. The results of this study show that the best temperature for the sulfation roasting process is 600oC, with a total REEs extraction percentage of 1.46%, Al and Fe extraction percentages of 0.15% and 0.09%. The sulfation roasting-water leaching method was ineffective in extracting REEs from granite, as well as the acid direct leaching method using HCl and water leaching, which resulted in a total REEs extraction percentages of 9.53% and 0.09%, respectively. The best stage one precipitation results were obtained under pH 3 conditions, with total REEs recovery of 93.05% and Fe removal of 62.32%. The best stage two precipitation results were achieved with pH 4.5 conditions, namely total REEs recovery of 46,48% and Al removal of 3.,19%. Thus, the precipitation process is better performed in one stage. These results can be a reference in determining the proper sulfation roasting temperature and precipitation pH for the extraction and recovery of REEs from granite.
