Abstract

This research begins with the stereotype that men can't be the victims of sexual objectification. Film as a mass media not only serves as an entertainment medium, but can also serve as a medium of delivering messages of an educational nature. With the development of the times, Indonesian cinema also frequently raises issues that happen in society. One of them is the film Dear David by director Lucky Kuswandi that wants to convey a message about how a man's body can be a sexual object. This research aims to identify the male body as a sexual object depicted in a film using Roland Barthes's semiotic theory by looking at aspects of denotation, connotation, and myth. The results of this study include twelve scenes depicting the sexual objectification of men's bodies in the film Dear David. The film provides a picture of the reality experienced by many men who are sexually objective victims in Indonesia, who also experience various forms of sexual objectivation both verbal and non-verbal. The film Dear David also served as a critical medium for educational institutions that were inadequate in dealing with the issue of sexual objectivity as well as portraying the realities on the ground of how male victims of sexual obiectivity are still often seen by the eye because of the toxic stigma of masculinity derived from a patriarchal culture.
