Abstract

Blue swimming crab (BSC) is one of the fisheries commodities with high economic value and is an export commodity with a high price. One of the main fishing grounds of BSC is located in Banten Bay, which uses bottom gill nets. The fishing operation of gill nets has a high potential for loss, known as Abandoned, Lost, or Discarded Fishing Gear (ALDFG). ALDFG has ecological impacts on the marine environment, including the socio-economic context, threatening the health and structure of marine habitats. This study aims to identify the render and estimate the number of ALDFG in BSC fisheries. Data were collected from November to December 2023 through in-depth interviews with 40 respondents, selected purposively in Karangmulya Village. Descriptively analysis is used to portray the dominant reason for ALDFG phenomena. The principal factors of ALDFG in BSC fisheries are conflicts with other fishing gear (85%), poor weather (40%), and errors in fishing methods (20%). Meanwhile, the estimated average of gillnet gear lost in one year reached 285 pieces per fisherman with a potential loss of Rp 86,070,000.
