Abstract

Reading comprehension is one of the important activities in order to acquire knowledge, information and entertainment. It is also a key provision of students‘ success in carrying out the educational process. Yet, students encountered problems in learning reading comprehension. Then, efforts are attempt to solve the problems. Short story is one of them. This research tries to discover the result and process of using short story to improve the students‘ reading comprehension. Classroom action research model of Kemmis and McTaggart (1996) was applied as a methodology. The research participants were students of VII A class of SMP PGRI Binuang which consist of 33 students. The VII A class was chosen because the students encountered a problem such as low understanding in reading test, and they are passive learners. The data was collected by using reading test and observation sheet as instruments. Miles and Huberman‘s (1994) data analysis was used in analyzing the data. During the process of teaching, some problems are occurred from the students such as afraid of giving wrong answers and shy when they were asked. The result of this research shows the noteworthy improvement in students‘ reading comprehension in their performance. It can be seen from the result of pre-test was increasing from 43.23 to 60.20 in cycle 1 and 80,01 in cycle 2. This indicates short story is giving significant improvement in students reading comprehension. Keyword: Short story, Reading, Reading Comprehension.
