Abstract

The objectives of this research are to find out the process in improving students’ speaking skill by using task-based language teaching method, the result of the research in implementing task-based language method and the students’ responses toward task-based language teaching method. To achieve the objectives of the study, the researcher conducted a classroom action research. This classroom action research held at SMPN 21 Kota Serang. The subject of the study was the eight grade. There were 38 students. The researcher carried out three steps. The first step was pre-test. The second step was the action. The action is consisted of two cycles. The difference between these cycles was on topic of the material used and in the activity. Each cycle consisted of teaching and learning process, in the end of every cycle the students were given a test. The last step was post-test. The instruments that used in the data collecting were test, observation, documentation and questionnaire. In analyzing the data, the researcher used qualitative and quantitative measurement to find out the result. The analysis of the data showed that there was a significant different between students’ pre-test and post-test. The students’ achievement in pre-test is 59,21%, then it increase 11,11% in the post-test 1 become 70,32% and keep increasing in the post-test 2 5,7% become 76,02%. Based on this data, the researcher concludes that improving students’ speaking skill by using task-based language teaching method was very beneficial for the students in order to facilitate them in learning English especially in speaking skill. It is suggested that teaching English speaking through task-based language teaching should be implemented by English teacher.
