Abstract

This research is conducted in order to describe the improvement of students’ speaking ability and the implementation of teaching speaking through storytelling activity at the tenth grade of SMAN 5 Kota Serang in 2014/2015 academic year. In conducting this research, the researcher used Calssroom Action Research (CAR) as the method of the research. This research consisted of two cycles and each cycle consisted of four stages, they were: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. Each cycle was conducted in three meetings, so the researcher conducted this research in six meetings for three weeks. To collect and analyze the data, the researcher used pre- test and post-test. The result of this research shows that using storytelling activity in teaching speaking English can motivate the students to learn English and improve their speaking ability. Moreover, the analysis of students’ achievements in pre-test, post test I and post test II shows an improvement. The students’ speaking improvement can be seen from the average score of pre-test, post-test of cycle I, and post-test of cycle II. The average score of the students’ improvement in pre-test was 51.22%. The average score of the students’ improvement in the post-test of cycle I was 56.66% and in the post-test of cycle II was 66.53%. In conclusion, the storytelling activity can improve students’ speaking ability. Therefore, it is recommended that storytelling activity is used by the English teacher particularly in the site.
