Abstract

The objective of the research was to find out the process of storytelling in improving students‘ speaking ability and students‘ improvements of speaking ability by Using Storytelling at the Eighth Grade of SMPN 8 Kota Serang. The researcher chose this title because speaking was still the problem for most of student in English learning process. As the result, there were many students‘ recieved scores below the standard (KKM) for English speaking (≥70). The research method used by the researcher was classroom action research (CAR) method consisted of one pre-test and two cycles. This research was conducted in academic year 2013/2014 from June 3rd until 14th 2014 and involved 28 students of the eighth grade students. In this research, the researcher did the pre-test at the first and followed by implementing two cycles which consisted of two meetings in each cycle. The first cycle was the implementation of storytelling in learning speaking about the recount text, and the next cycle was the revision of the previous cycle. The researcher used observation, oral test, and documentation as the instruments. In this research, the researcher became a participant observer and cooperated with the English teacher to observe the process of teaching speaking by using storytelling in the classroom. Finally, it can be concluded that the use of storytelling in teaching speaking is able to improve students‘ speaking ability at the eighth grade of SMPN 8 Kota Serang. It was showed by the result of the pre-test 59,8 to the post-test cycle two 79,6. Thus, the using of storytelling during this classroom action research had improved students‘ speaking achievement about 19,8. It proved that the students more active, enjoyed and motivated to learn speaking by using this strategy. Key words: Storytelling, speaking ability
