Abstract
This research focuses on how toxic masculinity characteristics are portrayed through narrative and character development in the film Barbie 2023. Data collection employed non-participant observation, documentary analysis, and literature review techniques. Data validity was ensured through triangulation methods. Using an interpretative approach drawing on Nick Lacey and Gillespie's narrative theory, the study found that the toxic masculinity conflict experienced by Ken can be understood through five stages of story development. The research concludes that the story structure or pattern of toxic masculinity issues depicted in Barbie 2023 is based on the relationship between Barbie and Ken characters, emphasizing how the narrative unfolds through their interactions and dynamics. Additionally, Barbie 2023 critically represents several aspects of toxic masculinity, including the four concepts of masculinity according to Brannon: "No Sissy Stuff," which highlights the rejection of behaviors deemed feminine and efforts to uphold traditional masculine images; "Be A Big Wheel," emphasizing the importance of success in economic and professional contexts as a primary determinant of social status; "The Sturdy Oak," focusing on physical and emotional strength and resilience; and "Give 'Em Hell," highlighting attributes of courage, independence, and willingness to confront challenges with aggressiveness. Other characteristics of toxic masculinity depicted include patriarchal systems, lack of empathy, and emotional violence. These findings provide deep insights into how Barbie 2023 portrays and questions concepts of masculinity within popular culture contexts.

| Additional Information: | Penelitian ini berfokus pada bagaimana karakteristik toxic masculinity digambarkan melalui narasi dan perkembangan karakter pada film Barbie 2023. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan teknik observasi nonpartisipan, studi dokumentasi, dan studi pustaka. Uji keabsahan datanya dilakukan menggunakan metode triangulasi data. Melalui pendekatan interpretatif dengan mengacu pada teori naratif Nick Lacey dan Gillespie, penelitian ini menemukan bahwa konflik toxic masculinity yang dialami oleh Ken dapat dipahami melalui lima tahapan perkembangan cerita. Sehingga hasil penelitian ini didapatkan bahwa struktur cerita atau pola isu toxic masculinity yang dibentuk pada film Barbie 2023 berdasarkan hubungan antar karakter Barbie dan Ken, merujuk pada cara narasi dikembangkan melalui interaksi dan dinamika antara karakter-karakternya. Selain itu film Barbie 2023 secara kritis merepresentasikan beberapa aspek toxic masculinity, yaitu empat konsep maskulinitas menurut Brannon, "No Sissy Stuff" menyoroti penolakan terhadap perilaku yang dianggap feminin, menggambarkan upaya untuk mempertahankan citra maskulinitas tradisional. "Be A Big Wheel" menekankan pentingnya kesuksesan dalam konteks ekonomi dan profesional sebagai penentu utama status sosial. "The Sturdy Oak" menyoroti kekuatan dan ketahanan fisik serta emosional, sementara "Give 'Em Hell" menyoroti atribut-atribut keberanian, kemandirian, dan kemauan untuk menghadapi tantangan dengan agresivitas. Serta karakteristik toxic masculinity lainnya meliputi sistem patriarki, serta anti empati dan kekerasan emosional. Temuan ini memberikan wawasan mendalam tentang bagaimana film Barbie 2023 menggambarkan dan mempertanyakan konsep-konsep maskulinitas dalam konteks budaya populer. | |||||||||
