Abstract

Technological advancements drive innovation in environmentally friendly material science. Environmental issues, such as pollution from toxic materials, motivate the development of sustainable biocomposites. One of the widely researched biocomposites is natural rubber-based composites with fillers that enhance their mechanical properties. Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is a popular inorganic filler. Marine shell waste, especially blood cockle shells (Anadara granosa) and eggshells, has become a serious environmental problem. This study aims to compare the effects of blood cockle shell and eggshell fillers on the mechanical properties of natural rubber through tensile testing to determine which filler is more effective in improving the composite's mechanical performance. The test results show that blood cockle shells have higher ultimate tensile strength (UTS) (up to 20.3 MPa) and a greater Young’s modulus (up to 3.4 GPa) compared to eggshells, which have the lowest UTS of 17.94 MPa and the lowest Young’s modulus of 1.8 GPa. This indicates that blood cockle shells are stiffer. However, eggshells have a higher yield strength (up to 15.2 MPa), indicating better elasticity. Additional Information: Kemajuan teknologi mendorong inovasi dalam ilmu material yang ramah lingkungan. Masalah lingkungan, seperti polusi dari bahan beracun, memotivasi penelitian biokomposit yang berkelanjutan. Salah satu biokomposit yang banyak diteliti adalah komposit berbasis karet alam dengan pengisi yang meningkatkan sifat mekaniknya. Kalsium karbonat (CaCO3) adalah pengisi anorganik populer. Limbah kerang laut, terutama cangkang kerang darah (Anadara granosa) dan cangkang telur, menjadi masalah lingkungan serius.. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membandingkan pengaruh pengisi cangkang kerang darah dan cangkang telur pada sifat mekanik karet alam melalui pengujian tarik, untuk menentukan pengisi yang lebih efektif dalam memperbaiki performa mekanik komposit. Hasil pengujian menunjukkan bahwa cangkang kerang darah memiliki nilai ultimate tensile strength (UTS) yang lebih tinggi (hingga 20,3 MPa) dan modulus young yang lebih besar (hingga 3,4 GPa) dibandingkan cangkang telur, yang memiliki nilai UTS terendah 17,94 MPa dan modulus young terendah 1,8 GPa. Ini menunjukkan bahwa cangkang kerang darah lebih kaku. Namun, cangkang telur memiliki yield strength yang lebih tinggi (hingga 15,2 MPa), menunjukkan elastisitas yang lebih baik.
