Abstract

Walnut plants are one of the non-timber forest products but there is still a lack of data on their production. One of the problems regarding the development of walnut cultivation and productivity is that it is not yet scientifically known about the viability level of walnut seeds. One of the efforts to detect viability quickly is by testing tetrazolium, electrical conductivity. This study aims to determine the morphological characteristics of walnut seeds and their shelf life through testing their moisture content, electrical conductivity, and tetrazolium. This research was carried out at the seed conservation laboratory of the National Research and Innovation Agency’s (BRIN) Bogor Botanical Garden from January to March 2024. This study was analyzed descriptively and anova. The results of the study showed variations in the morphological character of canary seeds (Canarium indicum L.) in the Bogor botanical garden collection. The morphological character of 100 walnut seeds shows that the percentage of light brown seed color is 80% and 20% dark brown, the seed texture is 100% coarse texture, there are 3 variations in the shape of the seeds. There are 3 variations at the tip of the seeds and the shape of the base of the seeds there are 2 variations. The storage power treatment showed a decrease in moisture content along with the storage period, an increase in electrolyte leakage, an increase in electrical conductivity value, and a decrease in the percentage of viable seeds in the tetrazolium test along with the storage period.

Additional Information: Kenari merupakan tanaman asli Indonesia yang memiliki nilai ekonomis yang tinggi dengan banyak mengandung lemak dan protein. Tanaman kenari merupakan salah satu hasil hutan bukan kayu namun masih minim penyediaan data tentang produksinya. Permasalahan mengenai pengembangan budidaya dan produktivitas kenari salah satunya adalah belum diketahui secara ilmiah mengenai tingkat viabilitas benih kenari. Permasalahan karakteristik benih kenari disebabkan karena masih terbatasnya informasi mengenai karakteristik benih kenari. Salah satu upaya untuk mendeteksi viabilitas secara cepat yaitu dengan uji tetrazolium, daya hantar listrik. Upaya untuk mengetahui karakter morfologi dan daya simpan sangat diperlukan dalam rangka menjaga kelestarian dan meminimalisir kepunahan. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui karakteristik morfologi benih kenari dan daya simpan melalui pengujian kadar air, daya hantar listrik dan tetrazolium. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di laboratorium konservasi benih Badan Riset dan Inovasi Nasional (BRIN) Kebun Raya Bogor pada bulan Januari 2024 sampai Maret 2024. Penelitian ini dianalisis secara deskriptif dan anova dengan software Dsaastat . Hasil penelitian menunjukkan variasi pada karakter morfologi benih kenari (Canarium indicum L.) koleksi kebun raya Bogor. Karakter morfologi dari 100 benih kenari menunjukan persentase warna benih coklat muda yaitu 80% dan 20% berwarna coklat tua, tekstur benih 100% bertekstur kasar, terdapat 3 variasi pada bentuk benih yaitu lonjong, bulat, lonjong meruncing, terdapat 3 variasi pada ujung benih yaitu runcing, tumpul, membulat dan bentuk pangkal benih terdapat 2 variasi yaitu runcing dan tumpul. Pada perlakuan daya simpan menunjukan hasil penurunan nilai kadar air seiring dengan lamanya penyimpanan, meningkatnya kebocoran elektrolit nilai daya hantar listrik dan menurunnya persentase benih viabel pada pengujian tetrazolium seiring dengan periode simpan
