Abstract

The aim of this research was to investigate the process of using jigsaw technique in improving students’ reading comprehension. The research design employed in this research was Classroom Action Research which consisted of four main steps: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting, conducted in two cycles. The research was conducted at the seventh grade of SMPN 8 Kota Serang which comprised of 40 students. Observation sheet, documentation, pre-test and post-test was used as instrument to collect the data. The research was considered successful if the degree of the students' reading comprehension score throughout the implementation achieved Minimum Mastering Criteria (MMC) or Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal (KKM) 70.The findings of the research showed that learning by using jigsaw technique could improve students’ reading ability. In the first cycle, the students still did not reach MMC or KKM. The improvement between pre – test and test in cycle I was 22 %. While the improvement from the result of test in cycle I and test in cycle II was 8%. It can be inferred, that learning by using Jigsaw technique could improve students’ reading ability, especially Descriptive text. Finally, it’s suggested that the teachers may use jigsaw technique in teaching reading, especially in reading descriptive by using jigsaw technique. The other researchers were invited to conduct further research based on the findings of this research to develop better method in teaching reading comprehension.
