Abstract
Indonesia is one of the countries that has a potential of 71,000 metric tons of cassiterite minerals. The distribution areas of cassiterite minerals in Indonesia are on Bangka Island, Belitung Island, Karimun Island, Kundur Island, Singkep Island, and Bangkinang Island. One of the uses of cassiterite mineral extraction (SnO2) is the formation of new compounds such as sodium stannate (Na2SnO3). Sodium stannate (Na2SnO3) has high economic potential where it has a selling price of around Rp. 274,000.00 - 365,000.00 / kg. In the ceramics and glass industry, sodium stannate (Na2SnO3) is used to remove lead and arsenic content. Sodium stannate (Na2SnO3) can be produced by an alkaline roasting process using a base solution, one of which is sodium hydroxide (NaOH). In addition, the addition of coal as a reducing agent in the alkaline roasting process can increase the formation of sodium stannate (Na2SnO3). To determine the success of the alkaline roasting process and increase the purity of sodium stannate, a water leaching process was carried out. The research variables of the alkaline roasting process consisted of temperature variations (600, 700, 800, 900°C) and coal variations (10, 15, 20, 25, 30%). While the research variables of the water leaching process consisted of pH variations (10, 12, 14) and time variations (1, 1.5, 2 hours). The results showed that the use of NaOH base and the addition of coal in the alkaline roasting process could increase the formation of sodium stannate with optimum conditions at a temperature of 700°C and 20% coal which produced Sn levels of 934.904 ppm. The water leaching process showed the effect of pH and leaching time on the purity of sodium stannate with optimum conditions at pH 14 and a leaching time of 1.5 hours which produced Sn levels of 8,743.71 ppm.
