Abstract

The type of steel commonly used as fluid transport pipes is API 5L X-42 steel. During the cleaning process, API 5L X-42 steel requires protection from corrosion during chemical cleaning using hydrochloric acid (HCl). To mitigate the corrosive nature of HCl, an environmentally friendly organic inhibitor derived from tuba extract is used. Tuba extract contains compounds that can reduce the corrosion rate, as evidenced by FTIR and GCMS testing. This study evaluates the effectiveness of tuba extract as a corrosion inhibitor through variations in concentration (0, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 ppm), immersion time (0, 30, 60 minutes), and temperature (30°C, 40°C, 50°C). Corrosion testing was conducted using Tafel polarization and EIS methods. The results show that tuba extract is effective at a concentration of 500 ppm, a temperature of 30°C, and an immersion time of 60 minutes, with the lowest recorded corrosion rate of 15.2 mpy and an inhibition efficiency of 95.2%. Other tests such as SEM, AFM, XRD morphology measurements, and Mott-Schottky testing indicate that tuba extract can reduce the corrosion rate by forming a protective layer on the surface of API 5L X-42 steel. The adsorption mechanism of tuba extract is physical adsorption, with Gibbs free energy values obtained at temperatures of 30°C, 40°C, and 50°C being -24.76 kJ/mol, -27.08 kJ/mol, and -28.52 kJ/mol, respectively.

Additional Information: Jenis baja yang sering digunakannya sebagai pipa pengalir fluida ialah baja API 5L X-42. Pada saat pembersihan baja API 5L X-42 memerlukan perlindungan dari korosi selama proses chemical cleaning menggunakan asam klorida. Untuk mengatasi sifat korosif HCl, digunakan inhibitor organik dari ekstrak tuba yang ramah lingkungan. Ekstrak tuba memiliki kandungan yang dapat menurunkan laju korosi dan dibuktikan dengan pengujian FTIR dan GCMS. Penelitian ini mengevaluasi efektivitas ekstrak tuba sebagai inhibitor korosi melalui variasi konsentrasi (0, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500 ppm), waktu perendaman (0, 30, 60 menit), dan temperatur (30°C, 40°C, 50°C). Pengujian korosi dilakukan dengan metode polarisasi Tafel dan EIS. Hasil menunjukkan ekstrak tuba efektif pada konsentrasi 500 ppm, temperatur 30°C, dan waktu perendaman 60 menit dengan laju korosi terendah tercatat 15,2 mpy dan efisiensi inhibisi 95,2%. Pengujian lainnya seperti pengukuran morfologi SEM, AFM, XRD, dan pengujian Mott-Schottky menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak tuba dapat menurunkan laju korosi dengan cara membuat lapisan pelindung pada permukaan baja API 5L X-42. Mekanisme adsorpsi ekstrak tuba adalah adsorpsi fisik dengan nilai energi bebas Gibbs yang didapatkan pada temperatur 30oC, 40oC, dan 50oC secara berturut-turut ialah -24,76 kJ/mol, -27,08 kJ/mol, dan -28,52 kJ/mol.
