Abstract

This research aims to determine knowledge of vocabulary mastery in students' reading comprehension of descriptive texts at the State Junior High School 3 Pasarkemis. This research is a qualitative research with a total of 68 students from classes VIII A and VIII C at State Junior High School 3 Pasarkemis. Data collection in this study used vocabulary tests on descriptive texts regarding material about jobs. This vocabulary test is in the form of multiple choice descriptive text and is used to determine students' knowledge of reading vocabulary mastery in understanding descriptive text. Based on the research results, the researchers took 68 students as participants to carry out the test. From this data, 5 students (7.35%) got grades in the good category. 11 students (16.18%) got grades in the fair category. 35 students (51.47%) got grades in the poor category. 17 students (25%) got grades that were classified as very poor. The indicator in the results of this research is that the lowest mastery is classified as the most. This is influenced by students' difficulties in mastering understanding vocabulary and difficulties in translating vocabulary in descriptive texts. This is also influenced by inappropriate teacher techniques and media, so that students' vocabulary mastery is poor and their reading ability is moderate.
