Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out the effect of Genre-Based Approach towards students writing ability on descriptive text of the first year students' at junior high school Karang Tanjung. The researcher used quantitative research with a quasi-experimental design for conducting the research. The population of this research was the first year students' at junior high school Karang Tanjung. The sample of this research was chosen based on the non-equivalent group design technique. The groups were put into an experimental group and a control group, each group consists of 30 students. Pretest was given to the groups at the beginning of the phase. Then the treatment was given twice to the experimental group. To find the effect, a post-test was given to the groups. The researcher used content validity, coefficient correlation, and KR-21 reliability to make the instrument was valid and reliable. In testing the hypothesis, the researcher used a t-test as a formula to know the effect of Genre-Based Approach towards students writing ability on descriptive text of the first year students' at junior high school Karang Tanjung. The calculation shows the result of hypothesis test showed that the Sig. value (2-tailed) was 0.000. It implies that the Sig. value was lower than 0.05 or 0.00 < 0.05. Moreover, based on the Effect Size test, the results obtained were 0.72 which means moderate effect. It can be concluded that there is a effect of Genre-Based Approach towards students writing ability on descriptive text of the first year students' at junior high school Karang Tanjung. It is suggested that Genre-Based Approach can be used by an English teacher to teaching speaking.

Additional Information: Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh Genre-Based Approach terhadap kemampuan menulis teks deskriptif siswa kelas satu SMP Karang Tanjung. Peneliti menggunakan penelitian kuantitatif dengan desain quasi-eksperimental untuk melakukan penelitian. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas satu SMP Karang Tanjung. Sampel penelitian ini dipilih berdasarkan teknik non-equivalent group design. Kelompok tersebut dimasukkan ke dalam kelompok eksperimen dan kelompok kontrol, masing-masing kelompok terdiri dari 30 siswa. Pretest diberikan kepada kelompok di awal fase. Kemudian perlakuan diberikan dua kali kepada kelompok eksperimen. Untuk mengetahui pengaruhnya, post-test diberikan kepada kelompok tersebut. Peneliti menggunakan validitas isi, koefisien korelasi, dan reliabilitas KR-21 untuk membuat instrumen tersebut valid dan reliabel. Dalam menguji hipotesis, peneliti menggunakan uji-t sebagai rumus untuk mengetahui pengaruh Genre-Based Approach terhadap kemampuan menulis teks deskriptif siswa kelas satu SMP Karang Tanjung. Perhitungan menunjukkan hasil uji hipotesis menunjukkan nilai Sig. (2-tailed) sebesar 0,000. Hal ini menyiratkan bahwa nilai Sig. lebih rendah dari 0,05 atau 0,00 < 0,05. Selain itu, berdasarkan uji Effect Size, hasil yang diperoleh adalah 0,72 yang berarti pengaruhnya sedang. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa ada pengaruh Genre-Based Approach terhadap kemampuan menulis teks deskriptif siswa kelas satu SMP Karang Tanjung. Disarankan agar Genre-Based Approach dapat digunakan oleh guru bahasa Inggris untuk mengajar berbicara.
