Abstract

ABSTRACT BETY SULISTIANI. The Application of Mathematics Learning with Open-Ended Approach to the Understanding of Mathematical Concepts Junior High School Students. Thesis. Mathematics Education Program. Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa. Serang. 2014. This research is motivated by low ability students 'understanding of mathematical concepts, so it is necessary to find an alternative learning that can improve students understanding of mathematical concepts, one is the application of learning with openended approach. This study aimed to determine: (1) Comprehension ability of students to use mathematical concepts mathematics learning with open-ended approach is better than the students who received conventional learning; (2) Increase in the ability of understanding mathematical concepts students are learning mathematics using the openended approach is better than the students who received conventional learning; (3) Studets attitudes toward mathematics learning using open-ended approach. The research was conducted in Serang City Junior High School 20. The method used is the method of quasi experimental. The sampling technique used was a random cluster sampling technique. The results showed: (1) Comprehension ability of students to use mathematical concepts mathematics learning with open-ended approach is better than the students who received conventional learning; (2) Increase in the ability of understanding mathematical concepts students are learning mathematics using the open-ended approach is better than the students who received conventional learning; (3) Students attitudes toward mathematics learning using open-ended approach is on the average percentage of strong classification.
