Abstract
The aims of the research were to describe the process of teaching listening through English pop songs and find out the improvement in teaching listening through English pop songs at eleventh grade students of SMAN 3 Kabupaten Tangerang academic year 2013/2014. The researcher found several problems in that school. The problems were the students were not interesting to learn listening because they had difficulties in vocabulary, they did not understand what were speaker said. Most of students also lacked of focusing listening material because the speed of delivery. Some others had low in motivation and they were not active in classroom activity. From the reason above, the researcher used English pop songs as a media to improve students’ listening skill. English pop song is a media which at least consists of lyrics, intonation and rhythm. It is a significant teaching tool in teaching English as a second and foreign language. The students felt comfortable, enjoyable and creative thinking when they learn listening through English pop songs. They also interested in teaching and learning process. The researcher used qualitative data by using Classroom Action Research, which consist of 4 steps, they are: planning, acting, observing and acting. The research was conducted in two cycles, each cycles consist of two meetings. The researcher gave pretest and post-test to the students. The subject of the research was the eleventh grade students of SMAN 3 Kabupaten Tangerang which consist of 36 students. The result of the research based on the data, cycle one and cycle two has been implemented was proven from the test. The test in cycle one was 71.11 and cycle two was 80.00. So, the students score from cycle one and cycle two improved around 8.89 points. It means that learning listening through English pop songs improved from the target.
