Abstract

The objectives of this research are to describe the process of teaching grammar through consciousness raising task and to know the improvement of students’ grammar mastery through consciousness raising task. To achieve the objectives of the research, the writer conducted a classroom action research. This classroom action research held at SMPN 1 Balaraja. The subject of the study was the eighth grades which are consist of 44 students. The writer carried out three steps it was based from Arikunto 2012). The first step is the pre-test. The second is the action which consisted 2 cycles. The differences between two cycles were on topic of the material and activities. The last step was the post-test. The instruments used in data collecting were test, observation and documentation. In analyzing the data, the writer used qualitative and quantitative measurement. The main of qualitative was to search the information and assess the situation in the classroom and quantitative research supported the qualitative data. The analysis of the data showed there was improvement of the students’ achievement in the pre-test and post-test. The achievement of students in pre-test was 76,9%. The average score of the students’ achievement in the first cycle was 77,7% and in the cycle two was 83,1%. It was improvement around 5,4%. The main factor affecting this improvement was the students’ interest in teaching learning process through consciousness raising task. Based on this data, the writer concluded that improving students’ grammar mastery through consciousness raising task was very beneficial for the students in order to facilitate them in learning grammar. It was suggested that grammar mastery through consciousness raising task recommended for English teacher. Keywords: Teaching grammar, Task Based Language Learning, Consciousness Raising Task.
