Abstract

Melon production fluctuates every year, specifically in Banten Province, due to the limitation of local superior melon seeds. Developing new superior melon varieties is a strategy to overcome this problem. The purpose of this research is to identify quantitative and qualitative characteristics of three candidate superior varieties. This experimental research was conducted at the Experimental Farm, the Faculty of Agriculture UNTIRTA, Kampung Cikuya, Desa Sindang Sari, Kecamatan Pabuaran, Kabupaten Serang, Banten. The research method used a non-factorial Randomized Block Design with treatments (genotypes) repeated five times. The genotypes used consisted of three test genotypes (UT4, UT5, and UT6) and 2 comparison melon varieties (Alisha and Kinanti). Quantitative characteristics were divided into six parameters. The parameter of fruit hardness showed no difference, while the parameter of flesh thickness showed a significant difference and those that showed a very significant difference were in the parameters of fruit length, width, weight, and sugar content, it was found that comparison varieties showed superiority over the three tested genotypes. Qualitative characteristics were divided into five parameters, on the parameters of fruit shape, peel colour, and peel type show uniform characters. The colour of fruit flesh and flavour showed various results, with very sweet flavour category obtained by the Alisha. The three tested genotypes did not show better quantitative characters than the comparator varieties. The genotype preferable as a new variety of melon is genotype UT6. Additional Information: Hasil produksi melon setiap tahunnya mengalami fluktuatif khususnya di Provinsi Banten, salah satu penyebabnya adalah keterbatasan benih melon unggul lokal. Perakitan varietas unggul baru melon merupakan salah satu cara untuk mengatasinya. Tujuan dari penelitian ini yaitu untuk mengidentifikasi karakter kuantitatif dan kualitatif dari 3 calon varietas unggul. Penelitian berjenis eksperimen ini dilaksanakan di Kebun Lahan Percobaan Fakultas Pertanian UNTIRTA Kampung Cikuya, Desa Sindang Sari, Kecamatan Pabuaran, Kabupaten Serang, Banten. Metode Penelitian yang digunakan yaitu Rancangan Acak Kelompok non Faktorial dengan perlakuan (genotipe) diulang sebanyak 5 ulangan. Genotipe yang digunakan terdiri dari 3 genotipe calon varietas unggul melon (UT4, UT5, dan UT6) dan 2 varietas melon pembanding (Alisha dan Kinanti). Karakter kuantitatif dibagi menjadi enam parameter. Parameter kekerasan buah menunjukkan perbedaan tidak nyata, selain itu parameter ketebalan daging buah menunjukkan perbedaan nyata dan yang menunjukkan perbedaan sangat nyata berada pada parameter panjang buah, lebar buah, bobot buah, dan kadar gula, serta didapatkan bahwa varietas pembanding masih menunjukkan lebih unggul dibandingkan ketiga genotipe uji. Karakter kualitatif dibagi menjadi lima parameter, pada parameter bentuk buah, warna kulit buah, dan tipe kulit buah menunjukkan hasil karakter yang seragam. Terdapat perbedaan hasil yang beragam pada warna daging buah dan rasa buah, untuk kategori sangat manis rasa buah didapatkan pada varietas G9-Alisha. Ketiga genotipe penguji masih belum menunjukan karakter yang lebih baik dari varietas pembanding. Genotipe calon varietas unggul melon yang dapat direkomendasikan sebagai calon varietas unggul baru adalah genotipe G8. Kata Kunci: Pemuliaan, Melon, Varietas, Genotipe, Kuantitatif, Kualitatif
