Abstract
The aim of this research was to investigate the process of using simple stories in developing students vocabulary mastery. The research design employed in this research was Classroom Action Research which consisted of four main steps: planning, action, observation and reflection, conducted in two cycles. The research was conducted at the eighth grade of SMPN 11 Kota Serang which consisted of 40 students. Observation sheet, documentation, pre-test and post-test were used as instruments to collect the data. The research was considered successful if the degree of the students‟ vocabulary mastery score throughout the implementation achieved of Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimum (KKM) it was 70. The findings of the research showed that learning by using Start with Simple Stories method could improve students‟ vocabulary mastery. In the first cycle, the students still did not reach Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimum (KKM), while in cycle 2, all of the students were be able to reach KKM. The improvement between pretest and the result of test in cylce one is 15%. The percentage of the improvement from the result of test in cycle one and the result of test in cycle two is 30%. It can be inferred, that learning by using Start with Simple Stories method could improve students vocabulary mastery. It can be seen from students‟ score improvement in their vocabulary mastery. Finally, it‟s suggested that the teachers may use Start with Simple Stories method in teaching vocabulary. The other researchers were invited to conduct further research based on the findings of this research to develop the same method in the teaching vocabulary.
