Abstract

The objective of the research is to find out whether there is any significant influence of short story toward students’ reading comprehension at the eighth grade of SMPN 3 Baros. This research was quantitative research by using quasi-experimental method. The population of this research was all of the students at the Eighth grade of SMPN 3 Baros consist of 90 students that are divided into two classes, namely control class (30) and experiment class (30). In this research sample that was used the students of VIII B as experimental class and VIII A as the control group. The researcher used purposive sampling technique to determine the sample. In this research, the students of experimental class could improve their reading comprehension. This proven by the result the mean of the pre-test of students in experimental class is 49.5 and in control is 52.17 while after the researcher gave several treatment the mean of post-test of students in experimental class which taught in learning reading comprehension in narrative text by using short story as media improved to 66.5. This result is higher than the mean of the post-test of students at control class is 59.83 which taught in learning reading comprehension by non short story. The researcher analyzed by using t-test. The result of this result revealed that the posttest scores were better than the pretest scores, it can be seen from the result of ttest. tcount 2.36 with df was 58 (N1+N2-2, 30+30-2 = 58). So, ttable = 1.672 = 0.05. Therefore, tcount was higher than ttable or 2.36 ≥ 1.672. it means, short story influence toward students’ reading comprehension, where the alternative hypothesis (Ha) be accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) is refused. So, the researcher concluded that there is any significant influence of short story toward students’ reading comprehension at the eighth grade of SMPN 3 Baros.
