Abstract

Foreign direct investment plays an important role in a country. The influx of foreign direct investment can increase economic development, improve economic management, efficient use of finance, and can increase employment opportunities. Since the 1990s, the flow of foreign direct investment has expanded into developed and developing countries. Generally, foreign investors prefer developed countries to invest their capital compared to developing countries. However, during 2020 -2023, there is a gap in the flow of foreign direct investment into developed and developing countries, where the inflow of foreign direct investment in developing countries increases and contributes 70% of global foreign direct investment. This research is aimed to analyze the influence of economic freedom, financial development, economic growth, inflation, and trade openness on foreign direct investment in 83 developing countries in the middle-income category for the period 2011 - 2023. Dynamic Panel approach with GMM (Generalized Method of Momments) model is applied for this research. The results of this research has been showed that economic freedom, financial development, economic growth, and trade openness have been given positive significant effects on foreign direct investment. Meanwhile, inflation is not found to give any significant influence on foreign direct investment.
