Abstract

Journalism and mass media are widely used by people not only to find out the latest news circulating in society but also as a tool to spread certain thoughts and ideas so that they can influence and shape public opinion about a social phenomenon that occurs around them. The development of ethical politics in the Dutch East Indies in the half of the 20th century opened the gates to a historical period known as the "National Awakening". Many elite figures, encouraged by education and scientific influence from Europe, began to form various organizations and newspapers as a step in opposing the form of Dutch colonial hegemony and power in Indonesia. Even though there was progress in the Dutch East Indies with the many schools built by the colonial government during the ethical-political policy, women did not share this feeling. This encourages many of them to use mass media such as newspapers and magazines as a bridge to express their feelings and criticism of the situation they are experiencing. One of the women who is active in voicing women's issues is Siti Sundari. Through this research, the author found that Siti Sundari had an important role in her efforts to fight for women's rights in Indonesia through her ideas conveyed in writing in various mass media such as Poetri Hindia, Goentoer Berberger, Medan Bermobil and Doenia Bermobil. He also founded the Wanito Sworo newspaper as a forum to spread his ideas about the importance of improving the position of women in society, both in terms of education, legal equality, marriage issues, and criticism of patriarchy and polygamy. Siti Sundari is not only known domestically, but based on the author's research, she is also famous in the European world and has been widely reported in Dutch newspapers. Using historical research, the author searches primary sources to reconstruct the development of Siti Sundari's life, as well as its influence on the history of Indonesian women, especially during the ethical-political period of 1913-1914.

Additional Information:	Jurnalisme dan media masa banyak digunakan oleh orang-orang tidak hanya untuk mengetahui kabar terbaru yang beredar di masyarakat, namun juga dipakai sebagai alat untuk menyebarkan ide maupun gagasan tertentu, sehingga dapat mempengaruhi sekaligus membentuk opini publik tentang suatu fenomena sosial yang terjadi di sekitar mereka. Perkembangan politik etis di Hindia-Belanda pada paruh abad ke-20, membuka sebuah gerbang periode historis yang dikenal sebagai “Kebangkitan Nasional”. Banyak tokoh-tokoh elit, terdorong oleh pendidikan dan pengaruh keilmuan dari Eropa mulai membentuk berbagai macam organisasi serta koran sebagai langkah dalam menentang bentuk hegemoni dan kekuasaan kolonial Belanda di Indonesia. Meskipun terjadi kemajuan di Hindia-Belanda dengan banyaknya sekolah-sekolah yang dibangun oleh pemerintahan kolonial pada masa kebijakan politik etis, tidak membuat kaum Perempuan ikut merasakan hal tersebut. Hal ini mendorong banyak dari mereka menggunakan media masa seperti koran maupun majalah sebagai jembatan untuk mengungkapkan perasaan serta kritik mereka terhadap situasi yang dialami. Salah satu kaum Perempuan yang aktif dalam menyuarakan isu-isu Perempuan adalah Siti Soendari. Melalui penelitian ini, penulis menemukan bahwa Siti Soendari memiliki peran penting dalam upayanya memperjuangkan hak-hak kaum Perempuan di Indonesia melalui gagasannya yang disampaikan secara tertulis di berbagai macam media masa seperti Poetri Hindia, Goentoer Bergerak, Medan Bergerak serta Doenia Bergerak. Dirinya juga mendirikan koran Wanito Sworo sebagai wadah untuk menyebarkan gagasannya tentang pentingnya peningkatan posisi Perempuan di masyarakat, baik dalam hal pendidikan, kesamaan hukum, isu-isu perwakinan, kritik patriarki maupun poligami. Siti Soendari tidak hanya dikenal di dalam negeri, namun berdasarkan penelusuran penulis, dirinya juga termahsyur di dunia Eropa dan banyak diberitakan oleh koran-koran Belanda. Dengan menggunakan penelitian historis, penulis melakukan penelusuran terhadap sumber-sumber primer untuk melakukan rekonstruksi terhadap perkembangan kehidupan Siti Soendari, serta pengaruhnya terhadap sejarah Perempuan Indonesia, terutama pada masa politik etis tahun 1913-1914.
