Abstract

This research aimed to investigate English teachers' knowledge of Higher-Order Thinking Skills or HOTS, how they implement HOTS in their English teaching, and students' responses to it. The research was narrative research. The data were collected from interviews, observations, and questionnaires. This research involved 2 English teachers and 49 students at a junior high school in Tangerang, Indonesia. The result of the research showed that teachers' knowledge about HOTS is well aware. The teachers implemented Problem-based, Project-based, Discovery, and Inquiry learning as their strategies. As the participants, students agreed that HOTS-based learning activities are important for developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills in English learning. Surprisingly, 85.71% of respondents confirmed that HOTS-based learning activities make English lessons more interesting and challenging. So, it can be concluded that the teachers are well aware of HOTS knowledge, and they implemented HOTS-based learning in class. The implementation of HOTS itself developed students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
