Abstract

Catching crabs using folding traps is widely used by fishermen because of the quality of the catch in a live condition and does not experience physical damage. However, the passive nature of the operation causes relatively low productivity. One of the factors that can increase the success of crab catching is baiting. The proper bait selection is crucial to increase the productivity of crab fishing. This study aims to determine the response and behavior of crabs to artificial bait on a laboratory scale. The artificial bait consisted of 15 grams of carrageenan and combined with crab extract with three different concentrations (400 ml, 500 ml, and 600 ml). The research was conducted at the Capture Fisheries Technology Laboratory of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University from November 2023 to January 2024. Observations were made through direct observation and recorded using an infrared camera. Descriptive analysis was used to determine the most effective type of artificial bait for catching crabs. The results showed that each artificial bait was responded differently by crabs. The most effective bait formulation was the 500 ml artificial bait. A total of 65% of the crabs gave a positive response in just 13.4 minutes after the bait was released. We conclude that artificial bait with 500 ml of crab extract is the right choice for catching crabs.

Additional Information: Penangkapan kepiting dengan menggunakan bubu lipat banyak digunakan oleh nelayan karena kualitas hasil tangkapan dalam kondisi hidup dan tidak mengalami kerusakan fisik. Namun, sifat operasi yang pasif menyebabkan produktivitasnya relatif rendah. Salah satu faktor yang dapat meningkatkan keberhasilan penangkapan kepiting adalah pemberian umpan. Pemilihan umpan yang tepat sangat penting untuk meningkatkan produktivitas penangkapan rajungan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui respon dan perilaku kepiting terhadap umpan buatan dalam skala laboratorium. Umpan buatan yang digunakan terdiri dari 15 gram karagenan yang dikombinasikan dengan ekstrak rajungan dengan tiga konsentrasi yang berbeda (400 ml, 500 ml, dan 600 ml). Pengamatan dilakukan melalui pengamatan langsung dan direkam menggunakan kamera inframerah. Analisis deskriptif digunakan untuk menentukan jenis umpan buatan yang paling efektif untuk menangkap kepiting. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa setiap umpan buatan direspon berbeda oleh kepiting. Formulasi umpan yang paling efektif adalah umpan buatan 500 ml. Sebanyak 65% kepiting memberikan respon positif hanya dalam waktu 13,4 menit setelah umpan dilepaskan. Kami menyimpulkan bahwa umpan buatan dengan 500 ml ekstrak kepiting adalah pilihan yang tepat untuk menangkap kepiting.
