Abstract

The objective of this research was to investigate student’s level of anxiety on speaking performance, student’s type of anxiety in speaking performance, and student’s strategies to overcome anxiety in speaking performance among the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 11 Serang. A qualitative case study was applied in this research. The participants of this research were one English teacher and 35 students of VIII.5 in SMP Negeri 11 Serang. The data were collected from non-participant observation, close-ended questionnaires, and semi-structured interview. The findings of this research showed that anxiety in speaking performance appeared during the speech performance. From the FLCAS questionnaire, it was found that 71.43% of all students experienced moderate levels of anxiety. Furthermore, the most experienced types of students’ anxiety were fear of negative evaluation 42%, followed by communication apprehension37%, and test anxiety 20%. There were five strategies that students used to overcome anxiety, such as preparation, relaxation, positive thinking, peer seeking, and resignation. Therefore, further investigation anxiety on speaking performance and its solutions must be done immediately to help students in EFL classrooms learn to speak English more fluently

Additional Information: Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menyelidiki tingkat kecemasan siswa dalam kinerja berbicara, jenis kecemasan siswa dalam kinerja berbicara, dan strategi siswa untuk mengatasi kecemasan dalam kinerja berbicara di antara siswa kelas delapan SMP Negeri 11 Serang. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode studi kasus kualitatif. Partisipan dalam penelitian ini adalah satu guru bahasa Inggris dan 35 siswa kelas VIII.5 di SMP Negeri 11 Serang. Data dikumpulkan melalui observasi non-partisipan, kuesioner tertutup, dan wawancara semi-terstruktur. Temuan penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa kecemasan dalam kinerja berbicara muncul selama pelaksanaan pidato. Dari kuesioner FLCAS, ditemukan bahwa 71,43% dari seluruh siswa mengalami tingkat kecemasan sedang. Selain itu, jenis kecemasan yang paling sering dialami siswa adalah ketakutan akan evaluasi negatif sebesar 42%, diikuti dengan kecemasan komunikasi sebesar 37%, dan kecemasan ujian sebesar 20%. Terdapat lima strategi yang digunakan siswa untuk mengatasi kecemasan, yaitu persiapan, relaksasi, berpikir positif, mencari dukungan dari teman sebaya, dan penyerahan diri. Oleh karena itu, investigasi lebih lanjut mengenai kecemasan dalam kinerja berbicara dan solusinya harus segera dilakukan untuk membantu siswa di kelas EFL belajar berbicara bahasa Inggris dengan lebih lancar.
