Abstract
This study was conducted with the aim to determine the effect of cognitive load management on students' mathematical skills (conceptual understanding and mathematical problem solving). This research was conducted at SMP Negeri 15 Serang City in the 2023/2024 school year with a sample of class VII D as a control class that received learning without cognitive load management and class VIII E as an experimental class that received learning with cognitive load management. The method used in this research is a mixed method concurrent embedded model with quantitative methods as primary methods and qualitative methods as secondary methods. The results showed that the achievement of conceptual understanding and mathematical problem solving of experimental class students was better than the control class. In addition, in terms of initial mathematical ability that experimental class students have better conceptual understanding and mathematical problem solving compared to control class students when viewed from initial mathematical ability with significant differences in the level of initial mathematical ability at high ability on conceptual understanding and at low ability on mathematical problem solving.

| Additional Information: | Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan tujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh pengelolaan beban kognitf terhadap kecakapan matematis (pemahaman konseptual dan pemecahan masalah matematis) siswa. Penelitian ini dilakukan di SMP Negeri 15 Kota Serang pada tahun ajaran 2023/2024 dengan sampel kelas VII D sebagai kelas kontrol yang menerima pembelajaran tanpa pengelolaan beban kognitif dan kelas VIII E sebagai kelas eksperimen yang menerima pembelajaran dengan pengelolaan beban kognitif. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini yaitu metode campuran model concurrent embedded dengan metode kuantitatif sebagai metode primer dan metode kualitatif sebagai metode sekunder. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pencapaian pemahaman konseptual dan pemecahan masalah matematis siswa kelas eksperimen lebih baik daripada kelas kontrol. Selain itu, ditinjau dari kemampuan awal matematis bahwa siswa kelas eksperimen memiliki pemahaman konseptual dan pemecahan masalah matematis lebih baik dibandingkan dengan siswa kelas kontrol jika dilihat dari kemampuan awal matematis dengan perbedaan tingkat kemampuan awal matematis yang signifikan di kemampuan tinggi pada pemahaman konseptual dan di kemampuan rendah pada pemecahan masalah matematis. | |||||||||
