Abstract

This current study is aimed at investigating the gender differences in performing refusal strategy and the effect of interlocutor status towards refusal strategy performed by the participants. This research was used qualitative approach. The participants of this study consisted of 17 male and 17 female students in English Education Department at University of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa. Discourse Completion Test (DCT) with 12 situations was used to obtain the data. The data were analysed into refusal taxonomy proposed by Beebe et al. (1990). The results showed that the indirect strategy become the most frequently used strategy performed by male and female students. However, the female students have used the variety of indirect strategy slightly greater than did the male students. Moreover, the interlocutor status also affected the similar effect toward refusal strategy performed by the participants. Thus there is no significant difference between male and female students in making refusals and the result showed that the EFL learners tend to refuse politely to avoid any offense. In order to collect the comprehensive data to investigate the pragmatic competence, the researcher suggested the further research to utilize not only DCT but also the other instruments in collecting the data.
