Abstract

The research paper is entitled “An Analysis of Students‟ Code Switching and Code Mixing in English classroom activity at SMPN 9 Kota Serang”. This research was intended to find out students‟ types of code switching and code mixing and the factors that caused the use of code switching and code mixing in teaching learning process. Theresearch methodology was qualitative. The subject of this research was VIII F of SMPN 9 Kota Serang.To collect the data, theresearcher used observation, and semistructured interview. Field note and video recording were used in the observation. In the semi-structured interview, voice recording was used. In the data analysis, qualitative data analysis from Miles & Huberman (1994) was used; data condensation, data display, and conclusion. The data analysis showed that: there were 57 utterances of code switching and code mixing; intra sentential 35,09%, inter sentential 5,26%, tag switching/emblematic switching 17,54% code mixing intra sentential mixing 14,04% inter lexical mixing 26,32% and involving a change pronunciation 1,75%. Moreover code switching and code mixing occured because students had few English vocabulary or their vocabulary mastery was low. This research concluded that code switching and code mixing happened due to students‟ low competence in English.
