Abstract
This research was conducted to analyze the code mixing used by students at XI Animasi 1 of SMKN 3 Kota Tangerang Selatan. This research aims to identify the types of code mixing that students use and to find out the students' reasons for using code mixing in class. The research only focused on Indonesian-English or English-Indonesian code mixing in the classroom. Three prominent types of code mixing were identified based on Hoffman’s theory: Intra-Sentential was found in 56 in the class (85%), Intra-Lexical was found in 7 data in the class (11%), and Involved Change in Pronunciation was found in 3 data in the class (4%). Intra-Sentential mixing being the most prevalent, showcases students seamlessly blending languages within a single sentence, while Intra-Lexical and Involved Change in Pronunciation add nuanced layers to their linguistic repertoire. On other hand, the researcher discovered six out of the seven reasons for using code-mixing based on Hoffman's theory. The result showed that there were 25 data (40%) that used code mixing for talking about a particular topic, 7 data (11%) to be emphatic about something, 2 data (3%) for interjection, 9 data (14%) for repetition used for clarification, 8 data (13%) for expressing group identity, and 12 data (19%) for the intentions of clarifying speech content for the interlocutor. The dominant reason for students using code mixing was talking about a particular topic. The findings underscore students' strategic use of code-mixing to overcome vocabulary challenges in an English-dominated academic environment. Understanding these practices provides valuable insights for educators and researchers seeking to enhance language learning environments and explore diverse linguistic strategies.
