Abstract

The aim of this research is to investigate the language content of the textbook criteria according to Cunningsworth theory in English Lesson 1 pubished by Gontor Modern Islamic Institution that used by mostly Pesantren in Indonesia and learned by students at 1st grade in Junior High School. The researcher used qualitative research, particularly content analysis. Observation, close-ended questionnaire and documentation are the data collecting technique. Subjects of this research were the second of Junior High School students of Subulussalam Islamic Boarding School, which consist of 30 students. It showed that students answered 70% agreed that the design and organization, language content, skills and the topic were appropriate for the content of the English textbook and 30% the students didn’t agree the level of grammar and the theme on the textbook remains on Indonesian culture. So, The English Lesson 1 published Gontor Modern Islamic Institution is fit the textbook criteria according to Cunningsworth theory.

Additional Information: Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menyelidiki kriteria isi bahasa dalam buku teks menurut teori Cunningsworth dalam Pelajaran Bahasa Inggris 1 yang diterbitkan oleh Lembaga Islam Modern Gontor yang digunakan oleh sebagian besar Pesantren di Indonesia dan dipelajari oleh siswa kelas 1 SMP. Peneliti menggunakan penelitian kualitatif, khususnya analisis isi. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah observasi, angket tertutup dan dokumentasi. Subyek penelitian ini adalah siswa SMP II Pondok Pesantren Subulussalam yang berjumlah 30 santri. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa siswa menjawab 70% setuju bahwa desain dan pengorganisasian, isi bahasa, keterampilan dan topik sesuai dengan isi buku teks bahasa Inggris dan 30% siswa tidak setuju tingkat tata bahasa dan tema pada buku teks tetap ada. tentang kebudayaan Indonesia. Jadi, Pelajaran Bahasa Inggris 1 yang diterbitkan Lembaga Islam Modern Gontor memenuhi kriteria buku teks menurut teori Cunningsworth.
