Abstract
The mass media is evolving and extending into social media as a bridge for communication and information, also serving its function as an early warning system for the community in natural disaster events. This research aims to determine the extent of the relation of the variable exposure to natural disaster news on social media (X) on the variable social participation of students (Y). The study utilizes media dependency theory, stating that media dependency is directly proportional to media effects; the greater someone’s dependence on media, the greater the effects produced by that media. The research method involves explanatory quantitative analysis with a survey technique. Spearman Rank analysis is used for hypothesis testing in the study. The results showed that exposure to natural disaster news on social media had a significant relation with students' social participation, as shown by the calculation results with a significance value of 0.00 < α (0.05) and a correlation value of 6.55, indicating a strong relation between the variables of exposure to natural disaster news on social media (X) and students’ social participation (Y).

| Additional Information: | Media massa berkembang dan merambah ke media sosial sebagai jembatan komunikasi dan informasi juga guna menjalankan fungsinya sebagai early warning system kepada masyarakat dalam peristiwa bencana alam. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui seberapa besar hubungan variabel terpaan berita bencana alam di media sosial (X) terhadap variabel partisipasi sosial mahasiswa (Y). Penelitian ini menggunakan teori dependensi media yang menyatakan bahwa ketergantungan media berbanding lurus dengan efek media, semakin besar ketergantungan seseorang pada media maka semakin besar efek yang ditimbulkan dari media tersebut. Metode penelitian ini menggunakan analisis kuantitatif eksplanatif dengan teknik survei. Analisis Rank Spearman digunakan sebagai pengujian hipotesis dalam penelitian. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa terpaan berita bencana alam di media sosial memiliki hubungan yang signifikan terhadap partisipasi sosial mahasiswa, hal ini terlihat dari hasil perhitungan yang menunjukan nilai signifikansi 0,00<α(0,05) dengan nilai korelasi sebesar 6,55 yang menunjukan bahwa tingkat hubungan atau keeratan antara variabel terpaan berita bencana alam di media sosial (X) terhadap variabel partisipasi sosial mahasiswa (Y) adalah kuat. | ||||||
