Abstract

The aims of this research were (1) to investigate the outside activities applied in the Al-Rahmah Islamic boarding school which help the students to acquire English and (2) to analyze the students’ difficulties during process of language acquisition especially in speaking and (3) their solutions to overcome it. This research used case study method. The researcher used the observation to observe the activities. Beside that, open-ended questionnaire used to find out their difficulties during the language acquisition process and interview used to find out the students’ solutions to overcome their difficulties. The sample of this research taken by justification technique, there were 25 nineth-grade female students who have had more than a year of experience practicing English. The findings showed there were 6 outside classroom activities applied routinely, namely; morning vocabulary (31%) as the highest chosen activity which help the students to acquire language according to them. Followed by public speaking (11%), morning conversation (10%), language law (8%), linguist cluster (2%) and vocabulary examination (2%). Even though morning vocabulary gets the highest score in percentage, the language acquisition process looks more significant in the language law activity which forces them to always use the target language for 24 hours. The students also faced difficulties included; pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and word choice during process of language acquisition especially in speaking. To overcome the difficulties they did some solutions, there are checking the dictionary, asking to the people who has better English skill, doing more practice in daily conversation, studying more the grammar, and finding out more vocabularies. Although the students faced some difficulties but they are still able to understand and respond to conversations in English. It can be concluded that the outside activities helped English acquisition for students in Al-Rahmah Islamic boarding school.

Additional Information: Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah (1) untuk menyelidiki aktivitas luar yang diterapkan di pesantren Al-Rahmah yang membantu siswa memperoleh bahasa Inggris dan (2) untuk menganalisis kesulitan siswa selama proses pemerolehan bahasa terutama dalam berbicara dan ( 3) solusi mereka untuk mengatasinya. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode studi kasus. Peneliti menggunakan observasi untuk mengamati kegiatan. Selain itu, kuesioner terbuka digunakan untuk mengetahui kesulitan siswa selama proses pemerolehan bahasa dan wawancara digunakan untuk mengetahui solusi siswa dalam mengatasi kesulitan mereka. Sampel penelitian ini diambil dengan teknik justifikasi, yaitu 25 siswi kelas sembilan yang telah memiliki pengalaman berlatih bahasa Inggris lebih dari satu tahun. Hasil temuan menunjukkan terdapat 6 kegiatan luar kelas yang diterapkan secara rutin, yaitu; kosakata pagi (31%) sebagai aktivitas pilihan tertinggi yang membantu siswa memperoleh bahasa menurut mereka. Diikuti dengan public speaking (11%), percakapan pagi hari (10%), hukum bahasa (8%), gugus bahasa (2%) dan ujian kosakata (2%). Meskipun kosakata pagi mendapat nilai persentase tertinggi, namun proses pemerolehan bahasa terlihat lebih signifikan pada aktivitas hukum bahasa yang memaksa mereka untuk selalu menggunakan bahasa sasaran selama 24 jam. Kesulitan yang juga dihadapi siswa antara lain; pengucapan, tata bahasa, kosa kata, dan pilihan kata selama proses pemerolehan bahasa khususnya dalam berbicara. Untuk mengatasi kesulitan tersebut mereka melakukan beberapa solusi, antara lain memeriksa kamus, bertanya kepada orang yang memiliki kemampuan bahasa Inggris yang lebih baik, lebih banyak berlatih dalam percakapan sehari-hari, lebih banyak mempelajari tata bahasa, dan mencari lebih banyak kosakata. Meskipun siswa menghadapi beberapa kesulitan namun mereka masih mampu memahami dan menanggapi percakapan dalam bahasa Inggris. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa kegiatan di luar membantu perolehan bahasa Inggris bagi santri di Pondok Pesantren Al-Rahmah.
