Abstract
Indonesia, a tropical country in Southeast Asia, ranks third globally as a banana producer after India and China. Although banana cultivation in Indonesia is quite high, the threat of disease, especially Panama Disease, is still a serious problem. Conventional approaches using fungicides have been found to be ineffective against TR4 (Tropical Race 4) chlamydiosphore. This study aims to explore endophytic fungi from wild bananas in Pandeglang as biological control agents against Panama disease. This study used in vitro, in planta methods, and observed the effects of endophytic fungi on Cavendish banana. Three selected endophytic fungus, identified as Fusarium sp. NMC278, NMC279, and NMC293, showed effective biological control potential against Panama disease, with inhibition percentages ranging from 10%-11% in vitro. The mechanism of biological control involves antibiosis through the release of secondary metabolites capable of inhibiting the pathogen, showing great potential against Panama disease. In planta tests showed induced growth in banana plants, reflected in increased stem diameter and number of roots. Detection of phenolic compounds showed that the inoculated endophytic fungi contributed to plant resistance, with positive reactions to glycosides, tannins and saponins. The educational implications of this study recommend the development of a digital encyclopedia (59.7%) as teaching material, based on a needs analysis of teachers and students in Senior High School (SMA).
