Abstract

Kappaphycus alvarezii contains flavonoid compounds that are useful as antibacterials. One of the bacteria that is easily found in humans is Streptococcus mutans. This bacterium is the main cause of caries. Caries are the cause of bad breath in humans, one solution to reducing it is the use of mouthwash. The study aims to determine the formulation between seaweed extract (Kappaphycus alvarezii) and mint leaves as mouthwash preparations and evaluate them to obtain a stable preparation. The research was conducted experimentally by covering the extraction stage, making mouthwash, as well as physical testing and antibacterial activity testing. The results showed that the organoleptic properties of each formula had a dark brown color, a distinctive mint aroma, and a liquid form. The pH test value of the four formulas met the requirements with a pH value of 5–6. In the centrifugation test, there was no phase separation. In the viscosity test, the four mouthwash preparations had a value of 1.2199–1.9143 cPs. The antibacterial activity of the four mouthwash preparations was unable to inhibit Streptococcus mutans. It is concluded that seaweed and mint extracts meet the physical requirements of mouthwash preparations but are not as effective as mouthwash preparations. This is because the active substances contained in seaweed extract do not act as antibacterials to prevent bacterial growth.

Additional Information: Kappaphycus alvarezii mengandung senyawa flavonoid yang bermanfaat sebagai antibakteri. Salah satu bakteri yang mudah ditemukan pada manusia adalah Streptococcus mutans. Bakteri ini merupakan penyebab utama terjadinya karies. Karies merupakan penyebab bau mulut pada manusia, salah satu solusi untuk menguranginya adalah dengan penggunaan obat kumur. Penelitian bertujuan untuk mengetahui formulasi ekstrak rumput laut (Kappaphycus alvarezii) dan daun mint sebagai sediaan obat kumur serta mengevaluasinya hingga diperoleh sediaan yang stabil. Penelitian dilakukan secara eksperimental dengan meliputi tahap ekstraksi, pembuatan obat kumur, serta uji fisik dan uji aktivitas antibakteri. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa sifat organoleptik masing-masing formula mempunyai warna coklat tua, aroma mint yang khas, dan bentuk cair. Nilai uji pH keempat formula memenuhi syarat dengan nilai pH 5–6. Pada uji sentrifugasi tidak terjadi pemisahan fasa. Pada uji viskositas keempat sediaan obat kumur mempunyai nilai 1,2199–1,9143 cPs. Aktivitas antibakteri keempat sediaan obat kumur tidak mampu menghambat Streptococcus mutans. Disimpulkan ekstrak rumput laut dan mint memenuhi syarat fisik sediaan obat kumur namun tidak seefektif sediaan obat kumur. Pasalnya, zat aktif yang terkandung dalam ekstrak rumput laut tidak berperan sebagai antibakteri untuk mencegah pertumbuhan bakteri.
