Abstract

Indonesia is one of the origins of the world’s banana diversity with more than 300 varieties. In addition to the high diversity and popularity of bananas, banana cultivation is currently challenged by the presence of diseases. The most common disease affecting banana plants is Fusarium wilt. Endophytic fungi have antagonistic properties that can be utilized as biological control. The purpose of this study was to characterize the antagonistic activity of endophytic fungi of banana plants (Musa paradisiaca) against the TR4 pathogen. The methods used were in vitro and in planta. The isolation results obtained 8 isolates of potential endophytic fungi as known as Fusarium proferatum (NMC236), Fusarium sp (NMC 264), Fusarium sp (NMC241), Fusarium sp (NMC250), Fusarium sp (NMC258), Fusarium oxysporum (NMC266), Fusarium oxysporum (NMC267) and Fusarium oxysporum (NMC272). Based on the antagonism test, isolates NMC266 and NMC267 showed the highest inhibition percentage of 70%. Their abilty to inhibit the TR4 pathogen can contribute to increasing banana plant growth, including number of leaves, plant weight, root length and root weight. The implication of this study can be the basis for the development of biological control strategies in efforts to conserve banana plants.

Additional Information: Indonesia merupakan salah satu asal-usul keragaman pisang dunia dengan varietas mencapai lebih dari 300 varietas. Selain keanekaragaman dan popularitas pisang yang tinggi, budidaya pisang saat ini memiliki tantangan dan ancaman yaitu dengan keberadaan penyakit. Penyakit yang paling sering menyerang tanaman pisang yaitu layu Fusarium. Fungi endofit memiliki sifat antagonis yang dapat dimanfaatkan sebagai pengendali hayati. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengkarakterisasi aktivitas antagonisme fungi endofit tanaman pisang (Musa Paradisiaca) terhadap patogen TR4. Metode yang digunakan yaitu in vitro dan in planta. Hasil isolasi didapatkan 8 isolat fungi endofit berpotensi yaitu Fusarium proferatum (NMC236), Fusarium sp (NMC 264), Fusarium sp (NMC241), Fusarium sp (NMC250), Fusarium sp (NMC258), Fusarium oxysporum (NMC266), Fusarium oxysporum (NMC267) dan Fusarium oxysporum NMC272. Berdasarkan uji antagonisme, isolat NMC266 dan NMC267 menunjukkan persentase penghambatan tertinggi yaitu ≥70%. Kemampuannya dalam menghambat patogen TR4 mampu berkontribusi dalam meningkatkan pertumbuhan tanaman pisang yaitu jumlah daun, berat tanaman, panjang akar dan bobot akar. Implikasi penelitian ini dapat menjadi dasar untuk pengembangan strategi pengendalian hayati dalam upaya pelestarian tanaman pisang.
