Abstract

This research aimed to determine the influence of Small Group Discussion on the speaking skills of eight grade students at SMP PGRI Walantaka Serang. Using a quantitative research, a quasi experimental design was adopted for this study. The population of this research was eight-grade students at SMP PGRI Walantaka Serang, and the sample was selected using total sampling, where all the students of eight-grade were chosen. A pre-test was given to both groups, followed by a treatment given to the experimental group. Then, a post-test was given to find out the improvement. To ensure the validity and reliability of the instrument, researchers used content validity and inter-rater reliability. The hypothesis was tested using the t-test formula to determine the influence of Small Group Discussion to the speaking skills of class VIII students at SMP PGRI Walantaka Serang. The calculation results show that the tcount is higher than the ttable value (4.95>2.02) with a significance level of 0.05 (5%). Therefore, it can be concluded that the small group discussion does influence the speaking ability of class VIII students at SMP PGRI Walantaka Serang.

Additional Information: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh Diskusi Kelompok Kecil terhadap keterampilan berbicara siswa kelas delapan di SMP PGRI Walantaka Serang. Menggunakan penelitian kuantitatif, desain eksperimen semu diadopsi untuk penelitian ini. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VIII SMP PGRI Walantaka Serang, dan sampel dipilih dengan menggunakan total sampling, yaitu seluruh siswa kelas VIII dipilih. Pre-test diberikan kepada kedua kelompok, dilanjutkan dengan perlakuan yang diberikan kepada kelompok eksperimen. Kemudian diberikan post-test untuk mengetahui peningkatannya. Untuk menjamin validitas dan reliabilitas instrumen, peneliti menggunakan validitas isi dan reliabilitas antar penilai. Hipotesis diuji dengan menggunakan rumus uji-t untuk mengetahui pengaruh Small Group Discussion terhadap keterampilan berbicara siswa kelas VIII SMP PGRI Walantaka Serang. Hasil perhitungan menunjukkan nilai thitung lebih besar dari nilai ttabel (4,95>2,02) dengan tingkat signifikansi 0,05 (5%). Oleh karena itu, dapat disimpulkan bahwa diskusi kelompok kecil berpengaruh terhadap kemampuan berbicara siswa kelas VIII SMP PGRI Walantaka Serang.
