Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the influence of using the THIEVES (Title, Headings, Introduction, Every first sentence in a paragraph, Visuals and vocabulary, End-of-chapter questions, and Summary) Strategy on reading comprehension in the eighth-grade students of SMPN 12 Kota Serang. The study utilized a quasi-experimental design, specifically a non-equivalent control group design, to compare the outcomes of an experimental group (n= 33) that received the THIEVES Strategy intervention with a control group (n= 34). The results indicated a significant improvement in the experimental group’s reading comprehension scores (M= 71.67, SD= 9.410) compared to the control group (M= 65.88, SD= 9.572). Moreover, the Sig = 0.000 and α = 0.05. It leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis (H0) and accept the alternative hypothesis (Ha) because 0.000 < 0.05 which is lower than 0.05. These findings explain that there is an influence by using THIEVES Strategy on reading comprehension skills among eight-grade students in SMPN 12 Kota Serang.

Penelitian ini menggunakan desain quasi-experimental, khususnya desain non-equivalent control group, untuk membandingkan hasil dari kelompok eksperimen (n=33) yang menerima perlakuan dengan menggunakan Strategi THIEVES dengan kelompok control yang tidak diberi perlakuan (n=34). Hasilnya mengindikasikan pengaruh yang signifikan pada pemahaman membaca kelompok eksperimen dengan nilai (M= 71.67, SD= 9.410) dibandingkan dengan kelompok kontrol group (M= 65.88, SD= 9.572). Kemudian, Sig = 0.000 and α = 0.05 pada kelompok eksperimen. Hal tersebut menolak hipotesis awal (H0) dan menerima hipotesis akhir (Ha) penelitian ini karena 0.000 < 0.05 yang mana lebih kecil 0.05. Penemuan ini menjelaskan bahwa ada pengaruh dengan menggunakan Strategi THIEVES dalam kemampuan pemahaman membaca diantara siswa kelas delapan di SMPN 12 Kota Serang.
