Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to investigate the components, types, and role of negotiation of meaning among students during oral interaction in a speaking class among second-year students at SMKS Kesehatan Utama Insani. The researcher employed a case study. Data collection techniques were observation, interviews, and documentation. This research used purposive sampling. The participants of this study were thirty students of the eleventh grade in pharmacy. After conducting the research, the researcher found four components of negotiation of meaning: triggers, signals, responses, and follow-ups. Four types of negotiation of meaning were identified: comprehension check, confirmation check, clarification request, appealing for help, and repetition. The positive correlation between confidence in speaking the language and the ability to ask for clarification highlighted the important role of negotiation in language learning. Peer assistance not only addressed pressing language challenges but also contributed to the development of effective communication skills and cultural understanding among learners. In conclusion, the component of negotiation of meaning that was mostly used by students at the eleventh grade was the trigger, the types of negotiation of meaning that were mostly used by students at the eleventh grade were repetition, and the role of negotiation of meaning facilitated collaborative efforts among students to seek clarification, fostering a supportive environment. This process boosted confidence, aided comprehension, and encouraged active contribution to each other's language development, creating a mutually beneficial learning community.

Additional Information: Tujuan utama dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menyelidiki komponen, jenis, dan peran negosiasi makna di antara para siswa selama interaksi lisan di kelas berbicara di antara siswa kelas dua di SMKS Kesehatan Utama Insani. Peneliti menggunakan studi kasus. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi. Penelitian ini menggunakan purposive sampling. Partisipan penelitian ini adalah tiga puluh siswa kelas sebelas di bidang farmasi. Setelah melakukan penelitian, peneliti menemukan empat komponen negosiasi makna yaitu pemicu, sinyal, respon, dan tindak lanjut. Empat jenis negosiasi makna diidentifikasi: pemeriksaan pemahaman, pemeriksaan konfirmasi, permintaan klarifikasi, meminta bantuan, dan pengulangan. Korelasi positif antara kepercayaan diri dalam berbicara bahasa dan kemampuan untuk meminta klarifikasi menyoroti peran penting negosiasi dalam pembelajaran bahasa. Bantuan teman sebaya tidak hanya mengatasi tantangan bahasa yang mendesak, tetapi juga berkontribusi pada pengembangan keterampilan komunikasi yang efektif dan pemahaman budaya di antara para pelajar. Kesimpulannya, komponen negosiasi makna yang paling banyak digunakan oleh siswa di kelas sebelas adalah pemicu, jenis negosiasi makna yang paling banyak digunakan oleh siswa di kelas sebelas adalah pengulangan, dan peran negosiasi makna memfasilitasi upaya kolaboratif di antara para siswa untuk mencari klarifikasi, menumbuhkan lingkungan yang mendukung. Proses ini meningkatkan kepercayaan diri, membantu pemahaman, dan mendorong kontribusi aktif terhadap perkembangan bahasa satu sama lain, menciptakan komunitas belajar yang saling menguntungkan.
