Abstract

This undergraduate thesis is about the errors students made at producing consonant sounds at the seventh grade of SMP PGRI Walantaka Serang. The objective of this research is to investigate what kinds of pronunciation errors and sources of pronunciation errors that the students made specifically on fricatives and affricates sound at the seventh grade of SMP PGRI Walantaka Serang. This research used qualitative methodology with case study as the research design. The sample of this research was class VII with total 25 students as the participants. Five of them were invited for the interview. The selection of these students was based on purposive sampling techniques. The data collecting technique used in this research was observation, interview, and documentation. Based on findings, it is found that the errors were found by the seventh grader of SMP PGRI Walantaka Serang are misformation errors with the presentation of 77,77% of total errors that students made. Followed by addition with 11,11%, omission errors with 7,40%, and the lowest error was misordering error with 3,70%. The source of errors was because of the involvement of students’ native language and accents; challenges in adopting English pronunciation; insufficient facility, lack of teachers, and students’ learning styles; and teacher’s inaccuracy in communicating the subject. Thus, the researcher concludes that students’ struggles with pronunciation specifically fricatives and affricates.
