Abstract

he objectives of this research are finding out students` difficulties in English pronunciation, analyzing the kinds of errors made by the students when pronouncing the words, and analyzing the students` efforts to cope the difficulties. This research purpose to the sample at English student of Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University in seminar proposal presentation of eighth semester. The research applied descriptive qualitative as its design to answer the research questions. The researcher conducting the study on the analyzing in segmental features of pronunciation such as vowel, diphthong and consonants sounds. This research used Surface Strategy Taxonomy to classify the kind of errors in pronunciation. The result of the analysis was the students did the omission errors, addition errors and misformation errors. In this research, the students were not producing misordering errors. The most students in this research did misformation errors in every segmental feature of pronunciation. The higher misformation errors appeared in consonants sounds. The students changed the sounds with the similar sounds. There was miss process when producing the sounds in the mouth. The cause of errors was the student makes incorrect sound production in the articulation system. Students` efforts to cope the difficulties were using e-dictionary, listening to the English songs, and read the English text. It is suggested to the lecturer of pronunciation subject to ask the students to practice English pronunciation as much as possible. Practicing the English pronunciation can help students to create good behavior in using articulation system.
