Abstract

The purpose of the study was to analyze students' ability to respond, answer or solve quadratic function problems based on APOS theory in terms of visual, auditorial and kinesthetic learning styles. This type of research is descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The subjects of this research were 7 students of class IX I SMP Negeri 14 Tangerang. The seven subjects were selected using theoretical sampling technique with two people in the high problem solving ability category, three people in the medium solving ability category, and two other people in the low problem solving ability category. Each category has one person with a different learning style. The research instruments included a problem solving ability test in the form of descriptions, learning style questionnaires, and interview guidelines with data analysis techniques carried out qualitatively through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that students with high problem solving ability with visual and auditorial learning styles met the indicators of each APOS stage at each problem solving step. Students with high ability are able to understand the intent and purpose of the problem. They wrote the solution steps systematically. Students with moderate problem solving ability are able to fulfill the indicators of the APOS stages. It's just that students with kinesthetic learning styles do not write answers systematically, because the conclusions are not written down, only mentioned during the interview. Students with low ability with visual and auditorial learning styles fulfill the APOS stages in some problems, there are problems that are not well resolved, so the APOS stages are not fulfilled. From this explanation, it can be concluded that learning style does not affect problem solving ability, and students with high and moderate problem solving abilities are able to fulfill the APOS stages, while students with low problem solving abilities are not fully able to fulfill the APOS stage indicators.
