Abstract

The purpose of this research is to investigate the use of social strategies and their impact on the speaking skills of 3rd semester students of the English Language Education Department, Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa. A qualitative case study was applied in this research. Participants in this research were an Academic Speaking lecturer and 41 third semester students of the English Language Education Department, Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa. Data collection was carried out through non-participant observation, semi-structured interviews and questionnaires. In analyzing the data, researchers used procedures, namely: data reduction, data aspect and drawing conclusions/verification. Observation findings regarding the use of social strategies in speaking activities revealed that lecturers and students mostly used social strategies, especially asking questions. Apart from that, the data findings also reveal the impact of social strategies on the speaking activities of 3rd English Department students. Moreover, as the questionnaires were distributed to 41 students according to the questionnaire results, it was found that the most used social strategy among the 3rd semester students of the English Education Department was empathizing with others. It was supported with the results that the highest percentages of often and always were found in empathizing with others as 26.21% and 27.43% respondents. Meanwhile, the least used social strategy among the 3rd semester students of the English Education Department was cooperating with others. It was discovered that the highest percentage of never was found in cooperating with others as 18.29% respondents. Therefore, all of the social strategies were used by the 3rd students of the English Department at Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa. Finally, the researcher recommends the further researchers to examine quantitatively how social strategy improves or affects other language abilities beside speaking ability.

Additional Information: Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menyelidiki penggunaan strategi sosial dan dampaknya terhadap keterampilan berbicara 3rd mahasiswa semester Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa. Studi kasus kualitatif diterapkan dalam penelitian ini. Partisipan dalam penelitian ini adalah seorang dosen Academic Speaking dan 41 mahasiswa semester tiga Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui observasi non partisipan, wawancara semi terstruktur dan kuesioner. Dalam menganalisis data, peneliti menggunakan prosedur yaitu: reduksi data, aspek data dan penarikan kesimpulan/verifikasi. Temuan observasi mengenai penggunaan strategi sosial dalam kegiatan berbicara mengungkapkan bahwa dosen dan mahasiswa paling banyak menggunakan strategi sosial, terutama mengajukan pertanyaan. Selain itu, temuan data juga mengungkapkan dampak strategi sosial terhadap aktivitas berbicara 3rd Mahasiswa Jurusan Bahasa Inggris. Selain itu, setelah angket disebarkan kepada 41 siswa, berdasarkan hasil angket, ditemukan bahwa strategi sosial yang paling banyak digunakan di antara 3 siswa adalahrd mahasiswa semester Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris berempati terhadap orang lain. Hal ini didukung dengan hasil bahwa persentase sering dan selalu tertinggi terdapat pada sikap berempati terhadap orang lain yaitu sebesar 26,21% dan 27,43% responden. Sementara itu, strategi sosial yang paling sedikit digunakan di antara ketiganyard mahasiswa semester Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris bekerjasama dengan yang lain. Diketahui persentase tidak pernah tertinggi terdapat pada kerjasama dengan orang lain sebanyak 18,29% responden. Oleh karena itu, semua strategi sosial digunakan oleh ketiganyard mahasiswa Jurusan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa. Terakhir, peneliti merekomendasikan peneliti selanjutnya untuk mengkaji secara kuantitatif bagaimana strategi sosial meningkatkan atau mempengaruhi kemampuan berbahasa lain selain kemampuan berbicara.
