Abstract
Fishers with multi-gear is likely to get more income that those who operate single gear for several reasons. Seasonal fluctuations in abundances of different target species can trigger some fishers to have more than one type gear. There are 107 fishing units with handlines and 117 fishing units with handline and bottom traps. Since the second type of fishing units require more capital the first one, the multi gear fishing units may not necessarily much better than single gear fishing units. This study was carried to compare the business feasibility between these two fishing units. Data on capitals, fixed and variable costs for running fishing business, expected volume and values of catches were collected from fishing fleets in the Tanjungpandan fishing port. A number of analyses were carried out to calculate benefit to cost ratio (BCR), return of investment (ROI), net present value (NPV), payback period (PP), and investment rate of return (IRR) for each of both types of fishing units. It was concluded that fishing units with handline and bottom traps were profitable than those with just handlines.
